June 27-July 11, 2007
Sponsored by the Worcester Art Museum at the Island Center for the Arts in Skopelos, Greece
Immerse yourself in the creative process with this landscape painting course on the Greek island of Skopelos. The diversity of the island’s terrain provides two weeks of inspirational painting locations and enough sketches, color studies and photographs to keep busy in the studio for a long time to come. Stone walkways twine through the picturesque village of Skopelos, with its white-washed houses and terra-cotta urns sprouting bougainvillea large enough to qualify as trees. The reflected light alone would keep any artist happy for months. Students will paint among the constantly shifting silvers of olive groves, along the orange cliffs surrounding the turquoise waters of the Aegean, and in the quiet sanctuary of a monastery. We’ll focus on making the most of on-site time by developing strong compositional studies, preparatory sketches, and color studies. The studies will then be used to complete on-site works and as a reference for works to be completed in the studio at a later date. Students will work in their favorite mediumoil paints (traditional or water soluble), acrylics, watercolor, colored pencil or pasteland should have a basic understanding of that medium. Colored pencil will be used as the color sketching medium, with specific instruction in its usage. Experienced watercolorists may opt to use watercolor as their sketching medium. Course instruction will involve lectures, one-on-one time with Kat, and group critiques. Frequent cultural workshops include classes on Greek language, history and culture, as well as an evening of Greek dancing and traditional music. Our class begins with a 2-day visit to Athens, highlighted by tours of the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum. We’ll dine in lively tavernas and explore the quaint streets of this legendary city. Class size is limited, so don't wait to sign up.
